L. Caldwell letter : Sierra Hotel, Lake Valley, Calif., to G.W. Chaplin, 1864 Mar. 20.

Handwritten letter from a man working as a laborer in Lake Valley, California (South Lake Tahoe region) to a friend describing daily life and environment of the area. Details include the amount of wages earned (3 dollars a day plus board), activities of teamsters and horses, steam boat construction details, references to Lake Bigler (now Lake Tahoe), the abundance of good fishing including observing another man catching large trout, his travels to Carson City, and experience with local hot springs. Other details include the names of other people in the area including Nelson Parker, Joshua Eggleston, George Ingham, Daniel Sprague, and Sam Parker. The Sierra Hotel's innkeeper is also named, Wm. Mack. The author asks for assistance in having a trunk and letters forwarded to him at the hotel.
